I'm having problems with my Substack account, which may result in my account going away for a few days. So if you, reader or subscriber, notice this, don't be surprised. Normal service will be resumed at some point.
The issue is that when I created this Substack I did it with an email account/address that I will call AAA. However I no longer have access to the AAA account. Instead I use a new email address, BBB, which I would like my Substack account to be connected to.
Substack have a procedure for changing the email address, however it requires still having access to the old email address, so that doesn't work for me.
I'm in contact with Substack support and they recently sent me an email (at the BBB email address, obviously), saying:
Hi there,
Thanks again for reaching out. Unfortunately, we're unable to provide account information, change ownership, or grant account access at this time. There's no verification information (like payment info or security questions) that will allow us to verify ownership.
If desired, we can delete the publication by sending an account deletion email to the address on file. If we don't receive a reply in 5 business days, we will delete the publication (and account) per GDPR. After deletion, you'll be able to reclaim the subdomain.
Please confirm if you'd like to start this process.
For future reference, we recommend following the instructions in this help center article: How can I recover my Substack account if I lose access?
Best,
Jim @ Substack
The problem with this email is that Jim is under the misapprehension that I no longer have access to my Substack account. I clearly do (on my Firefox browser) which is why I has able to post this article to it.
(However accessing Substack on Firefox is becoming difficult as recent changes to it have broken the site on that browser. It still works in Chrome however. (It's bad practise that Substack have done this -- they should make their site work under any browser, which is something quite simple to do: simply don't do complex things or involve lots of client-side JavaScript. However that's another story.). While I have access to my Substack on Firefox I don't on Chrome because I would need it connected to my new BBB email address to log in on Chrome.)
Jim's proposed solution is he sends an email to the AAA address and if they don't reply within 5 days, he will delete the account and let me reclaim the subdomain.
The problem with this solution is that it is cumbersome and involves the site going down before i can put it back up.
So I would like to suggest another solution:
(1) Jim sends an email to the AAA address
(2) if they don't reply within 5 business days, he transfers the substack account to the new BBB email address
This achieves the same effect as his proposed solution, without the site going down.
Edit 6-Dec-2024:
Substack have refused to contact me about resolving this issue, so I am forced to create a new Substack, Pontifex Minimus II, which is at pontifex2.substack.com.
