What Labour said
In their manifesto for the recent general election, Labour said (p.47):
Set up Great British Energy to cut bills for good
On page 48 they said:
Labour is the only party with a proper plan to cut energy bills for good
They went into more detail on page 50:
We will end the chaotic Conservative chopping and changing on policy, harness clean power to boost our energy security, and invest in home insulation upgrades. We will save families hundreds of pounds on their bills, not just in the short term, but for good.
And on page 51 the further emphasised the point:
Families and businesses will have lower bills for good
Given all this, you'd expect Labour would lower energy bills. Let's see what they did...
What Labour did
The Guardian reports that energy bills to rise by 10%:
Average annual energy bill to rise by 10% to £1,717 in Great Britain from October
Households in Great Britain will begin the run-up to winter with a 10% increase in their energy bills after the industry regulator increased its cap on gas and electricity prices from October.
Under the new price cap, the average annual dual-fuel energy bill will rise to £1,717 a year, up £149 from its current level of £1,568, which has been in place since July.
The price cap is set every quarter by Ofgem, the energy regulator for Great Britain, and imposes a maximum on how much suppliers can charge their 28 million household customers per unit of gas and electricity.
It is expressed in terms of how much the average home would pay at this rate for their typical annual energy use, which means a cold autumn and winter could push bills even higher if households need to keep the heating on for longer.
Less than 2 months after the election, when they promised to cut bills, they've instead jacked them up by 10%.
Labour have clearly demonstrated that they have no respect for the voters, they merely treat them like scum who should be lied to, to win an election, and then when the election is safely won, kick them up the arse by a massive increase in the bills they promised to cut.
If Starmer carries on like this, his opinion poll ratings will go lower than Sunak's, and he may well lose the next election by a bigger landslide than he won the last one. And that would be what he deserves.
Make politicians' promises legally binding
Politicians' promises should be made legally binding, so that they can't pull a stunt like this in future.
The way this could work is if a government does something that's at odds with their manifesto, or if MPs vote in a way differently from how they promised, it would automatically trigger a by-election in all their constituencies.
Totally agree about a core of legally binding promises .
