Wings over Scotland notes this Daily Express front page:
Apparently Alex Salmond’s Alba Party is the greatest threat the UK has ever faced.
If that’s true, it’s all Westminster’s fault. During the 2014 independence referendum campaign the Westminster party leaders all made a Vow saying, in effect, that they loved and respected Scotland and they wanted us to stay in the UK. Scots believed them, and voted 55-45 to stay in the UK.
And that’s now things would have remained, if Westminster hadn’t reneged on their Vow.
The day after the referendum, Cameron announced English votes for English laws.
A year later, during the Westminster election, Cameron used the threat of a labour-SNP coalition to persuade English voters to vote Tory. Proving that when they said we were “Better Together”, what they really meant was “better together so long as Scotland doesn’t get its fingers on the levers of power”.
A year after that, the government in a referendum asked Scotland where we wanted to stay in the EU. When we said yes, Westminster told us “fuck you Scotland, you’re leaving the EU whether you like it or not”.
The enemy is not the English people. The enemy is Westminster, which is unreformable and has no intention of treating Scotland with respect.
If you want proof that Westminster is unreformable, consider that they’ve been talking about electoral reform for over 100 years — it was proposed in 1918 to use STV for Westminster elections — but it hasn’t ever happened. Why should it, when the Labour and Conservative parties are happy with their cozy little duopoly, where they take turns thwarting the will of the British people?
If Westminster doesn’t like the prospect of Scottish independence, thinking it will diminish the (residual) UK, maybe they should have thought of that before they treated us with such contempt. It’s probably too late for them now.
Fuck Westminster, let’s take back control and rule ourselves!
