When US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz mistakenly added a journalist to top secret discussions, the most important thing leaked was the US government's attitude to Europe: a mixture of contempt, loathing and disgust.
For example, Vance suggested delaying the attack on the Houthis in order to harm Europe:
“I am not sure the president is aware how inconsistent this is with his message on Europe right now. There’s a further risk that we see a moderate to severe spike in oil prices. [...] But there is a strong argument for delaying this a month, doing the messaging work on why this matters, seeing where the economy is, etc.”
Vance's argument was that since more trade through the Suez Canal goes to Europe than the USA, delaying it would harm Europe, make it look weak and making it possible for America to extort some money out of Europe.
Michael Waltz (National Security Advisor) said:
“Whether it’s now or several weeks from now, it will have to be the United States that reopens these shipping lanes. Per the president’s request we are working with DOD and State to determine how to compile the cost associated and levy them on the Europeans.”
VD Vance added:
I just hate bailing Europe out again
To which Hegseth (Secretary of Defense) replied:
VP: I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It’s PATHETIC.
Someone identified as SM (presumably Stephen Miller, the deputy White House chief of staff) added:
“As I heard it, the president was clear: green light, but we soon make clear to Egypt and Europe what we expect in return. We also need to figure out how to enforce such a requirement. EG, if Europe doesn’t remunerate, then what? If the US successfully restores freedom of navigation at great cost there needs to be some further economic gain extracted in return.”
Conclusion
It it wasn't obvious before, it is now: the USA is not on Europe's side. Therefore Europe needs to be politically united and militarily powerful. All other considerations are secondary.
"Special relationship" is pure cope
And British politicians such as Keir Starmer and David Lammy need to shut the fuck up about Britain having a "special relationship" with the USA. While that might have been true in the past (though that's debatable), it certainly isn't now. When the British ruling class to pretends there's a "special relationship", that's purely a coping mechanism on their part, so they can pretend to themselves that Britain is still an important country.
Make Britain important again
If the ruling class want to think of Britain as important, then they need to actually make Britain important: by increasing defence capability, rejoining the EU, and joining any new security institutions Europeans come up with. Indeed, Britain should take the lead in proposing/creating new security institutions.
