I don't know who Bridgen is or what he believes in, but unless I see evidence to the contrary, I'm going to assume that "we need to step in diplomatically and help de-escalate" means "we need to step in diplomatically and help de-escalate", as opposed to "we need to pressure Ukraine to surrender."

The government refuses to pay doctors, nurses teachers etc (the "essential workers" during lockdown) because of budget constraints. However, for war the cry is always "as much as it takes" because the people making the big decisions are profiting from war.
